“This marks the culmination of a thoughtful, thorough, and inclusive search process — one that has engaged voices from across our campus and community,“ Board of Regents Chair Nathan K. Ford said in a letter to the university community. ”We are deeply excited to reach this milestone and to soon welcome a new leader who will guide EMU into its next chapter of excellence, innovation, and student-centered success.”
This comes after James Smith announced his intention to step down from the role when his contract ends in June 2026. Smith is the 23rd president of Eastern Michigan University and began serving the university on July 1, 2016. He announced his intent to leave in June 2024.
“The depth and diversity of the candidate pool, and the strength of the finalists, reaffirmed the national reputation of EMU as an institution that attracts talented leaders ready to embrace our mission,” Ford said. “We are confident that the individual we will introduce on December 10 will inspire our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners, and will build upon the legacy of President Smith while charting an ambitious course forward."
