Video footage shows that a bus stopped in a Romulus neighborhood so that a student could get off the bus.

After the student got off the bus, they attempted to cross the two-lane street when a white car went in the opposite lane to go around the bus, and nearly hit the child.
The car briefly stopped before driving away.
No one was hurt, but the Romulus Police Department called the situation “a very close call.”
The driver, a 26-year-old, was later identified and is facing misdemeanor charges.
The penalty for the first offense of illegally passing a school bus is a fine of up to $500 and 100 hours of community service, according to police.
“Stopping for school buses is not optional—it’s the law," Romulus police said. “When a school bus displays its stop sign and flashing red lights, all drivers must come to a complete stop. These signals are in place to protect our children as they enter and exit the bus.”
Romulus police say they are working with the school district to review footage from buses when violations like this one happen.
Drivers who don’t stop for buses will be “identified, issued violations, or prosecuted,” according to police.
