Cookie Colab designs originally started out on holiday cookies when Lugo would bake with her daughter.

You’re baking away in the kitchen and you run out of powdered sugar. You’ve got cookies in the oven and you can’t run to the store! Kila Peeples discovered a way to get more of your key ingredient using two items that you can find in your pantry. Put a half cup of regular sugar in a mixer, along with a tablespoon of cornstarch and mix for about five minutes. Kila tried this out and then made two batches of frosting, one with store-bought powdered sugar, and another with the sugar she made.

The two sold cookies out of their house, and over the last two years built a demand for their product. Today we’re celebrating National Homemade Cookies Day. Lauren Roumayah owner of the Detroit Cookie Company in Ferndale gave us a few pointers. Roumayah suggests using a spoon to scoop flour into the measuring cup to stop it from clumping. If you make too much cookie dough, Roumayah says you should scoop the dough into small balls and freeze them for later. If you don’t want to make your own cookies you can visit Detroit Cookie Co. and try their new fall cookie flavors.
