LANSING, Mich. – Michigan health officials have issued citations to 13 businesses due to violations of the COVID-19 order put in place by the Department of Health and Human Services. “We continue to see improvements in the numbers, and we know that the public health orders we have put in place are working. “The number of cases, the positivity rate, and hospital capacity have declined in recent weeks, taking stress off our hospitals and health care workers,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive at MDHHS. “We will continue to monitor the data and assess for any potential surges in cases after the holidays. Most food service establishments like restaurants and bars have helped play a critical role in the existing decline by following the order.”

GAYLORD, Mich. – A man threatened to blow up the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office unless someone was sent to arrest him, police said. Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office learned Saturday about a social media post in which Philip H. Stone, 37, of Gaylor, threatened to blow up their building if the department didn’t send someone to arrest him by Jan. 13, according to authorities. Stone also threatened to kill anyone who tried to arrest him for any reason and that his statement should be taken as a terrorist threat, officials said. He has ties to the Monroe County area and was upset about a pending Friend of the Court hearing, authorities said. Stone was formally arraigned Monday (Jan. 4) in Otsego County on one charge of making terrorist threats.

Parts of the Northern Lower Peninsula are under a Winter Storm Warning with a big snowmaker moving in this weekend. Gusty northeast winds are also expected to result in areas of blowing snow.”The main stretch of the storm will be Saturday and Saturday night with 5-10 inches of snow possible in heaviest areas. A winter storm warning goes into effect later tonight for areas including Ludington, Baldwin, Reed City, Clare, Hart, Fremont, and Big Rapids. A winter storm watch is in effect for most of the Northern Lower Peninsula, from Alpena to Traverse City. Mostly snow is expected north and west of a Bay City to Grand Rapids line, where 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible (a Winter Storm Watch has been issued there).

Parts of the Northern Lower Peninsula will see their first big snow system this weekend of the season. The National Weather Service in Gaylord says, “A potentially impactful storm system across mainly northern lower Michigan this weekend with accumulating snow likely Saturday and Saturday night. In Metro Detroit, the same system will bring rain to the area with highs near 50 degrees. Paul Gross: Rain here in southeast Michigan changes to snow showers overnight Saturday night, with lows in the mid 30s (2 degrees Celsius). Snow showers Sunday morning should end, with cloudy skies for the remainder of the day.

A liquor license has been suspended at a Michigan establishment Wednesday for violating the state’s recent public health order meant to slow the spread of coronavirus. The Michigan Liquor Control Commission issued an emergency suspension of the liquor license at Iron Pig Smokehouse in Gaylord. The state’s health order is currently in effect until Dec. 8. Anyone who wishes to report a violation at an establishment or suspected non-compliance with the MDHHS order can call the Michigan Liquor Control Commission’s toll free hotline at 866-893-2121. On Thursday, the state reported 7,146 new COVID-19 cases and 175 new deaths in Michigan since Wednesday.

Despite the bankruptcy Ruby Tuesday still has Michigan restaurants open in Big Rapids, South Canton and Cadillac. According to reports a total of 185 Ruby Tuesday restaurants will be closed across the country due to the bankruptcy filing and restructuring efforts by the company. The company reportedly started closing locations before the bankruptcy filing.

LIVINGSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Macomb man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident happened on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. Michigan State Police troopers from the Gaylord Post saw a vehicle on I-75 near Parmater Road in Livingston Township traveling 90 miles per hour in a 75 mile per hour zone. Police said Kevin Patrick Scully, 59, was driving and arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Third Offense. Scully was arrested after police said the had him take sobriety tests. Scully was arraigned in the 7-A District Court in Otsego County for one count Felony Operating While Intoxicated Third Offense, one count Driving While License Suspended, and one count Open Intoxicants in Vehicle.

GAYLORD, Mich. Police are looking for a missing 78-year-old man from Gaylord last seen Saturday evening. According to authorities, Nelson William Wheaton was last seen riding his green Polaris Ranger on Beechnut Trail. Police said Wheaton is in the early stages of dementia and left his phone, wallet and hearing aids at his home. Anyone who has seen Nelson William Wheaton or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call the Michigan State Police Gaylord Regional Dispatch at 989-732-5141.

KALKASKA COUNTY, Mich. Michigan State Police troopers arrested a Gaylord man in Kalkaska Township early Wednesday morning for possession of a handgun and other charges. The driver was placed in Kalkaska County Jail and charged with possession of firearms by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon, open intoxicants in a vehicle and unlawful use of a license plate. A passenger, 37 of Thompsonville, was cited for open intoxicants in a vehicle. Michigan State Police arrested a Gaylord man for possession of a firearm by a felon and other charges. MIO, Mich. – It’s a bird, it’s a plane -- wait, no -- it’s a dust devil! That’s right -- because 2020 just isn’t ready to stop delivering surprises, a dust devil was captured on video in Northern Michigan over the weekend. The National Weather Service in Gaylord posted video sent in by Tyra Berger in Mio, Michigan (about 30 miles east of Grayling), showing a dust devil whirling around near a McDonald’s restaurant. A dust devil is defined as: A small, rapidly rotating wind that is made visible by the dust, dirt or debris it picks up. Also called a whirlwind, it develops best on clear, dry, hot afternoons.

OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich. A driver was arrested after leading police on a chase over the Mackinac Bridge on Thursday morning. Officials say the driver, a 31-year-old woman from Waterford, initially pulled over but then fled the scene. Stop sticks were successfully deployed and the Volkswagen continued to drive across the Mackinac Bridge on its rims. Police say bridge traffic was halted by the Mackinac Bridge Authority after they were notified of the situation. The woman was then arrested and transported to the Otsego County Jail.

Officials have identified a positive coronavirus (COVID-19) patient who went to three businesses in Northern Michigan over the weekend and might have infected other people. They released the locations, dates and times of the possible exposure. Contact tracing happens when someone tests positive for the virus, and contact tracers track down close contacts that person had and places they visited during the time they might have been infections. BELLAIRE, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan hunter convicted of killing another hunter on the first day of the 2018 deer season was sentenced Monday to at least five years in prison. David Barber of Gaylord was sentenced for involuntary manslaughter and a gun offense, about a month after a jury convicted him in Antrim County. Investigators said Barber believed he had shot a deer but instead struck Justin Beutel who was found slumped over a deer, 55 yards (50.2 meters) away. Beutel, 38, of Midland County had sent a photo of himself and his buck to family just before his death. Barber, 46, will be eligible for parole after five years in prison.

OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich. – Two Michigan men were killed Sunday when one of them drove south in the northbound lanes of I-75 and crashed head-on into the other one in Otsego County, police said. The crash happened at 4:11 p.m. Sunday on southbound I-75 near the Gaylord exit, according to authorities. Deputies said Roger Phelps, 77, of Lake City, was heading north in the southbound lanes of I-75 when he crashed into a vehicle heading south. The second vehicle was driven by Lawrence Johnson, 63 of Holt, officials said. Officials tried to treat the men, but they were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Parts of Northern Lower Michigan will get some decent snow tonight and into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Western part of Northern Lower Michigan, including Grand Traverse County, down to Ludington, Cadillac and Gaylord. “An arctic front will bring very cold air into the Great Lakes today into Wednesday. This cold air over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes will kick on the lake effect machine once again. The typical northwest flow snow belts should see the most snow through Wednesday.”Most of the impacted area will see 2-3 inches of snow, with an isolated six or more inches.

Michigan State Police Sergeant James Bush has been credited with potentially saving an elderly man’s life last night in Chester Township, according to MSP. Sergeant James Bush found the 79-year-old man slumped over in the snow. After following the tracks, Bush found a 79-year-old Royal Oak man who was barefoot, slumped over and couldn’t stand. Bush then carried the man, who couldn’t tell which direction his cabin was in, to his truck. Bush’s wife’s call and the fast response of Sergeant James Bush, the outcome may have been different,” the release states.
