DETROIT โ Michigan may play a role in easing overcrowding at border facilities. The Great Lakes State was mentioned in a list of states along the Canadian Border to potentially be used in a little-known immigration program to help decrease over-crowding. According to emails obtained by the Washington Post, officials have requested air support from U.S. Immigration to relocate migrants to states like Michigan, South Dakota or Montana. The DHS program, known as ICE Air, was used during the Trump Administration at the height of immigration in 2019. Rep. Rashida Tlaib visited the U.S. southern border Friday alongside other lawmakers to tour a facility in Texas.

Several members of Michiganโs congressional delegation are backing a bill that would help neighborhoods rebound from the current financial crisis. The bill, introduced Thursday by Rep. Marcy Kaptur and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, is large and sweeping. It would be one of the largest bills aimed at fixing blight and keeping low-income neighborhoods together. โWe donโt want to tear down our neighborhoods anymore, we want to invest in them,โ Tlaib said. The only GOP official to co-sponsor the bill is also from Michigan, Rep. Fred Upton.

The latest sign that a $15 minimum wage is popular with voters came in November, when more than 60% of voters in conservative-leaning Florida approved an amendment to the stateโs Constitution that will raise the minimum wage there from $8.56 an hour to $15 an hour by 2026. โThe real way to appreciate this work is to raise the minimum wage to $15,โ she said. Currently, 29 states and Washington, D.C., have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
