Michigan State Police said the crash happened at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, in the eastbound lanes of I-696 near 11 Mile Road in Warren.

Investigators said the semi truck driver was speeding and lost control, causing it to jackknife and block the left three lanes.

The truck began leaking fuel, requiring a significant cleanup, authorities said.

While the freeway was being cleaned, additional crashes occurred, forcing the remaining lanes to be shut down.

Officials expected the right lane of eastbound I-696 to reopen first, followed by the left three lanes, which will remain closed until around 10 p.m.
