Metro Detroit woman warns of Facebook hackers stealing identities, bank info in growing trend

She said scammers were using her photos and personal life information to defraud others

Metro Detroit victim Kathy Lamphere shared her story about how Facebook hackers are no longer browsing your photos, but instead, high-tech thieves are now stealing identities and personal banking information, which is a trend that’s becoming increasingly common.

Lamphere told Local 4 on Monday (Feb. 10) that she wanted to raise awareness.

She said she was shocked when her Facebook page disappeared, only to find her identity being used in a different account under a different name.

She said scammers were using her photos and personal life information to defraud others.

The fake account promotes Bitcoin and other investments, and new followers have been falling for the scam.

The situation worsened when the scammers accessed Lamphere’s bank accounts, with some already gaining entry.

The incident has highlighted the importance of securing online accounts and being vigilant against potential threats.

Officials said to protect yourself from Facebook scammers, it’s crucial to choose strong and unique passwords, limit the amount of personal information shared online, and avoid clicking on suspicious links and pop-up ads.

Deleting text messages from unknown senders can also help prevent unauthorized access.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) said it was aware of those scams and warned that clicking on unknown links or visiting websites that mimic Facebook can expose individuals to hackers.

Staying informed and taking preventive measures can help safeguard personal information from these high-tech thieves as well.
