The countdown is on until Thanksgiving, and while you might have your menu planned, have you considered what you need to keep away from your pets?
Lidia Vesterfelt from Michigan Humane joined “Live in the D” to share some Thanksgiving food safety warnings.
Pets are a big part of the family but be cautious of inviting them to the dinner table this Thanksgiving. The turkey and fixings may be delicious for you, but they can be dangerous or even deadly for pets. Popular festive foods such as turkey skin/bones, stuffing, mashed potatoes, butter, garlic, onions, and almost all common spices are toxic to dogs.
You might be tempted to offer your dog a turkey bone as a snack, but Lidia explained how they can easily break, causing internal injuries. Instead, you can consider offering them a pet-friendly treat such as a stuffed Kong, a snuffle mat filled with their favorite snacks, or a Thanksgiving-themed toy to include them in the festivities.
Lidia emphasized the importance of properly disposing all turkey bones, packaging, and food scraps into a safe container that your pet cannot access. Remember to feed your pet their regular meal at dinner time.
