Despite having a footprint of roughly five square miles, there’s a lot of history and culture packed into this Macomb County community.
New Baltimore has sat on the shores of Lake St. Clair for more than 150 years. Originally settled as the Village of Ashley in 1851, the village’s name was changed to New Baltimore in 1867. After experiencing significant growth, it was incorporated as a city in 1931. Initially, it was split between Macomb and St. Clair counties, but residents were able to petition to change the county borders to align with the New Baltimore’s.
The city utilized its access to the Great Lakes to serve as a hub for agriculture and manufacturing, but as trains became more common, New Baltimore shifted to a popular vacation spot for Metro Detroit -- featuring hotels, summer activities, saloons, an opera house and more.

Today, New Baltimore is home to Michigan’s largest flag, the Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival and its beautiful views of Anchor Bay.
