Teen charged in Detroit block party mass shooting that killed 2, injured 19

Mass shooting probe yields 10 arrests, 21 guns seized

DETROIT – A 19-year-old is being held on a $1 million bond in connection with a mass shooting at an illegal street party in Detroit over the summer.

Demitrus Tiwan Shaw has been arrested and charged in the July 7, 2024, shooting that killed two people and injured 19 others.

Interim Detroit police chief Todd Bettison announced the update Friday, Jan. 10, a little more than six months after the shooting. It happened at a block party that was taking place near the intersection of Reno Street and Rossini Drive on the city’s east side.

The mass shooting -- possibly the worst in Michigan history -- also resulted in an internal investigation into the police response to the incident.

According to authorities, police executed 11 search warrants on Tuesday, Jan. 7, that resulted in the recovery of 21 guns, an estimated half million dollars worth of drugs and 10 arrests.

Among the arrests was 19-year-old Demitrus Tiwan Shaw, who has been charged with murder and assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent and four counts of felony firearm. He was given a $1 million bond.

While there have been arrests, Bettison said the investigation is not over. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-5840 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
