LENOX TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The search at a Macomb County landfill for Ashley Elkins, a mother missing since Jan. 2, continued for a second day.

Her ex-boyfriend, Deandre Booker, is in custody for allegedly lying to the police.

Despite making significant progress Tuesday, Jan. 14, the search will continue a third day, into Wednesday.

Dozens of people searched the landfill in Lenox Township in freezing temperatures. About 80,000 tons of garbage has been removed.

They utilized bulldozers, rakes and shovels on Monday, while cadaver dogs were added to the search Tuesday.

“Everyone’s on pins and needles waiting for a call from the police department,” said Maurice Morton, a representative for the family.

Jan. 2 was the last time loved ones said they saw the 30-year-old mother of two. Her disappearance led investigators to a Roseville apartment, the home of her ex-boyfriend.

Days later, the 32-year-old was taken into custody in Flint.

Prosecutors said they believe he planned to run based on his search history.

The search area for Elkins is a 6.5-acre parcel. Police said the search is nearing completion.

While Booker remains behind bars, Elkins' family believes there could be more to the story.

“Maybe someone out there still knows something, right? Or, something more,” Morton said. “Don’t think this is over because he’s been arrested.”

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to help Elkins' sons, ages seven and 10.
