Man arrested on open murder 35 years after woman killed

Linda Marie Meteer (Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office)

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A suspect has been arrested 35 years after the murder of a Northern Michigan woman.

According to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Linda Marie Meteer, 41, of the Traverse City area was found dead on Thursday, April 27, 1989, in Hoosier Valley in Grand Traverse County. She was a mother to five children at the time of her murder.

An investigative task force with officers from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, and Michigan State Police was formed to investigate her murder. The task force was unsuccessful.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office continued to investigate. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, a 63-year-old Leelanau County man was arrested on an open murder charge in Meteer’s death.

In December of last year, the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office posted on social media that they believed that “with the advancements in technology and forensic sciences, the continued dedication of our detectives, and information from our community, we will be able to identify the suspect in this murder and bring them to justice.”

They had previously met with representatives from the Grand Traverse County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Michigan State Police Crime Lab in Grayling, and Western Michigan University Cold Case Program for assistance in the investigation.

No further information was released.
