Tracking 2 severe weather threats in Metro Detroit -- Here’s what’s expected

Complex weather maker working its way towards Southeast Michigan

There is a marginal risk of severe storms on Friday and more storms are heading to Metro Detroit on Saturday.

Today

Latest data looks like we could see these storms arrive as early as noon and remain active through the early evening. Damaging wind gusts around 60 mph and heavy downpours will be the primary hazards.

If you are looking at radar, this is a multicell storm cluster moving SW to NE around 35 mph. Highs today will be in the mid to upper 80s. Otherwise, a warmer summertime pattern is expected Friday and will continue through the weekend as humidity and heat indices trend higher.

This weekend

Saturday brings better storm potential across the area.

All of Southeast Michigan is under a slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather on July 12.

An approaching cold front will clash with a hot and humid air mass potentially producing isolated severe storms and localized heavy rainfall. Highs will be in the low 90s and feeling like upper 90s with the heat index.

The storms will be more linear along the frontal passage between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. We could have some lingering early morning showers Sunday, but drying out and staying warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s.
