Coldest air of season so far coming Friday to Metro Detroit -- here’s how cold it’ll get

Metro Detroit is on the verge of experiencing near-record cold temperatures

DETROIT – Metro Detroit is on the verge of experiencing near-record cold temperatures tomorrow, Dec. 5.

Overnight lows are expected to drop into the single digits, giving Metro Detroit a strong chance to tie the record low of 6 degrees -- a mark that was originally set back in 1974.

As the day progresses, temperatures will only climb into the low to mid-20s, which is still quite chilly for early December.

The record for the lowest maximum temperature on Dec. 5th is 23 degrees, set way back in 1926, and tomorrow’s highs could come close to matching that historic cold.

The real challenge won’t just be the thermometer readings -- it will be the wind chills that make it feel even colder.

Subzero wind chills are expected across the area Friday morning, with temperatures feeling as frigid as 10 degrees below zero.

This combination of cold air and strong winds will create harsh conditions, so it’s important to bundle up and take precautions if you need to be outdoors.
