On this last day of National Heritage Month, we were joined by a Detroit author who is educating children about Latin culture and showing them that everyone who is Hispanic or Latinx does not necessarily look the same. She has written the book, โLatina Looks Like Me,โ a personal story of her own upbringing.

Beloved childrenโs author Beverly Cleary dies at 104

Clearyโs publisher HarperCollins announced Friday that the author died Thursday in Carmel Valley, California, where she had lived since the 1960s. Trained as a librarian, Cleary didnโt start writing books until her early 30s when she wrote โHenry Huggins,โ published in 1950. Among the โHenryโ titles were โHenry and Ribsy,โ โHenry and the Paper Routeโ and โHenry and Beezus.โAdRamona, perhaps her best-known character, made her debut in โHenry Hugginsโ with only a brief mention. AdโDear Mr. Henshaw,โ the touching story of a lonely boy who corresponds with a childrenโs book author, won the 1984 John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Austin Channing Brown is being called one of the most important voices in America. Brown is a best-selling author who is educating and inspiring many people about racial justice. Her book is called โIโm Still Here.โ The book has been a catalyst for many conversations. They want to get the language right, make sure they donโt say the wrong things, have their Black Lives Matter bumper sticker,โ Brown said. โOne of the first questions I get, โIf I care about racial justice -- What should I do?โ And youโre already doing it.
Local author teaches important life lessons through childrenโs books
She is a local childrenโs book author, former teacher, public speaker, she started her own publishing company, and now she is even hosting a classroom of her own online. At the time she was a teacher and realized there were not many books for kids that had characters that looked like them. The book teaches kids to have the courage to be themselves. AdAs an author, publisher, and former teacher she was invited into a lot of classrooms to be a public speaker. Like many, she did the pandemic pivot and decided to bring her lessons to their homes with Sunny Side School, a virtual classroom.

Ann Arbor author pens childrens book about long distance friendship
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Ann Arbor childrens author Lauren Ranalli has penned a book about staying connected to friends despite long distances. Initially inspired by a long-distance friendship of her niece, Lets Meet on the Moon focuses on a friendship between a young boy and girl. While the book is geared towards young readers, parents and older readers can also find meaning in the story about connectedness. Ranalli said that some readers have even told her they plan to mail the book itself to friends or old roommates as a sign of friendship. Lets Meet on the Moon is the third book that Ranalli has worked on with Ann Arbor illustrator Emily Siwek.
JK Rowling's tweets on transgender people spark outrage
LOS ANGELES Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is facing hefty backlash after she posted a series of tweets about transgender people. If sex isnt real, theres no same-sex attraction, she tweeted. If sex isnt real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. A Harry Potter fan group tweeted its disapproval of Rowlings post and encouraged followers to donate to a group that supports back transgender women. JK Rowling continues to align herself with an ideology which willfully distorts facts about gender identity and people who are trans, GLAAD tweeted.
