DETROIT – Metro Detroit bid a fond farewell to one of its longtime radio friends Friday as Frank Beckmann retired after 48 years behind the microphone. Just shy of five decades, the one constant voice from the golden tower of the Fisher Building and WJR was that of Beckmann. He started out doing sports before he branched into talk radio. “I don’t even realize how much I’m going to miss it yet. Ad“I promise I’ve gotten more return for doing this job than I ever could have given and I’ve tried my hardest to give,” Beckmann said.

DETROIT – By the time the Detroit Tigers take the field for Opening Day, they will be playing on a network with a brand-new name: “Bally Sports Detroit.”FOX Sports announced at noon Wednesday (March 17) that it is rebranding all of its regional sports networks. For example, FOX Sports Detroit will now be called “Bally Sports Detroit.”That change will be made for all the regional sports networks under the FOX affiliation. “The FOX Sports regional networks are now Bally Sports,” a promotional video announced. You can watch the full video below. That means the first full day of Ball Sports Detroit will include the Tigers’ first game of the 2021 season against the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park.

DETROIT – Matthew and Kelly Stafford will soon be leaving the Motor City to make their way west to Los Angeles. Matthew Stafford will be taking on a new role as quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams. “We wanted to leave something to show how grateful we are to this place,” Kelly Stafford said. Matthew is a regular at the SAY Detroit Radiothon and the couple donated time and money to make Stafford Field a reality at the SAY Detroit Recreation Center. They donated $1 million to make the Kelly and Matthew Stafford and Friends Education Center a reality.

Fox Sports Detroit, the main broadcasters for the three pro sports teams in Detroit, along with other local sports programming, will be renamed as part of a major rebranding by Sinclair and Bally’s Sports. According to SBD, Fox Sports Detroit will be renamed Bally Sports Detroit. Sinclair bought the regional sports networks from Disney in 2019 and sold the naming rights to Bally’s in November.

DETROIT – Detroit sports broadcasting legend Frank Beckmann has announced his plans to retire after 48 years with WJR. Beckmann has hosted “The Frank Beckmann Show” on weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon for the last 18 years. Throughout his career, Beckmann is the only person to broadcast games for all four of Detroit’s major sports teams -- the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions. “As a youngster growing up on the east side of Detroit, I always imagined sitting behind a microphone, announcing Lions and Tigers games,” Beckmann said. Beckmann was indicted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Vikings (7-9) failed for the fourth time in a decade to make two straight trips to the playoffs. The Lions (5-11) lost their last four games eight of 10 after going into November with a .500 record under former coach Matt Patricia. In a matchup without postseason implications, the Vikings and Lions combined to play a closely contested game with a lot of highlights and lowlights. Alexander Mattison ran for 16 yards to convert a fourth-and-1 from the Lions 25 with 2:28 left, allowing the Vikings to run out the clock to seal the win.

It was announced that Wilson is retiring at the end of 2020. His retirement is giving him some time to reflect on all that he helped achieve in Detroit sports over the course of four decades. He spent 32 years working for former Detroit Pistons owner Bill Davidson. First, with the Pistons and most notably as president and CEO of Palace Sports and Entertainment. In February 2010, Wilson was hired by Olympia Entertainment to help develop a new home for the Red Wings.

DETROIT – Detroit Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell and four assistants will be forced to sit out Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay after two individuals in the organization tested positive for COVID-19. After the Lions let go head of coach Matt Patricia, Bevell stepped in as interim coach for the team. Now the Lions will have an interim coach to replace their interim coach who has to sit out Saturday’s game against the Buccaneers due to the NFL’s COVID protocols. On game day, Bevell won’t be able to communicate with the interim coaches. NFL rules state that the coaches can’t have any contact, so the assistant coaches stepping in will be all on their own.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is finally recognizing the historic Negro Leagues as part of its own history -- counting the statistics and records of thousands of Black baseball players. The MLB is now recognizing more than 3,400 players as “Major League” players for the first time in history. “It’s overdue, but it’s a bittersweet moment because most of the guys are gone,” said Negro League historian Louis Manley Jr. Between 1920 and 1948, four major Negro League teams played in Detroit. He could do it all,” Rosilyn Stearnes said of her father Turkey Stearns.

DETROIT – A Detroit Lions staff member has tested positive for COVID-19, officials announced Friday. The Lions' communications department issued a statement Friday evening saying that a staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 and the club is taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. “Our club was notified today that a staff member has tested positive for COVID-19. The news comes just after Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was placed on the NFL’s Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. Coronavirus cases are continuing to rise throughout the state of Michigan and the U.S.On Thursday, Michigan reported its single-highest increase in COVID-19 cases -- 5,170.

Forward Anthony Mantha is locked up for another four years with the Detroit Red Wings. Mantha, 26, was under a two-year contract that expired at the end of the 2019-20 season. He began to hit his stride in 2017-19 with 24 goals for the Red Wings -- he followed that up with 25 goals in 2018-19. This past season Mantha only appeared in 43 games for Detroit, but he still managed 16 goals and 22 assists thanks to a hot start to the season. DETROIT – The postgame stats stuck out in glaring fashion after the latest home loss by the Detroit Lions. Detroit's anemic running game — and indeed, its offensive ineptitude in general — had the Lions playing from behind the entire second half Sunday, and they eventually lost 41-21 to Indianapolis. The Lions managed only 29 yards rushing and lost the time of possession battle badly. “You want to try to do your best to stay balanced all the way through the game,” coach Matt Patricia said. “In order to win, you’ve got to stop the run.”Peterson is averaging 3.8 yards per carry in his first season with the Lions.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms Thursday on one-year contract extensions with forwards Adam Erne and Taro Hirose. Erne had two goals and three assists in 56 games this past season. Hirose had two goals and five assists in 26 games for the Red Wings last season. He also played a bit for Detroit in 2018-19 after signing with the Red Wings as a free agent. He tied a franchise record by earning an assist in each of his first five games with the team.

Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes to Tre'Quan Smith 2:19 apart in the second quarter, helping the short-handed Saints rally to beat the Lions 35-29. The Saints took a step toward sealing the win with Brees converting a third-and-5 from his 27 with a 19-yard pass to Smith. In Week 2, they were ahead by 11 points against Green Bay before giving up 31 straight points and losing an 11th straight game. “Let’s just talk about the Saints game," Patricia said when asked if he was concerned about his job security. Thomas, who practiced during the week, missed a third straight game with an ankle injury.

DETROIT – The Detroit Lions activated safety Jayron Kearse after he served a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse. Detroit released running back Ty Johnson on Thursday to clear a roster spot for Kearse. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Kearse signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Detroit as a free agent. ALLEN PARK, Mich. The Detroit Lions have signed defensive end Will Clarke, adding much-needed depth at the position. Clarke, who has seven career sacks in 53 NFL games, joined the team for practice on Sunday. The Lions released guard Caleb Benenoch to clear a spot on the roster for Clarke. Clarke is the fourth defensive end on Detroit's roster, joining starters Trey Flowers, Romeo Okwara and rookie Julian Okwara. Clarke played for the St. Louis BattleHawks in the XFL last year.

DETROIT Grayson Greiner has been at his home in South Carolina since the players were send home from Spring Training. He said hes watching for news of a possible MLB season like the rest of us.
