What happens to plastic bottles when you recycle them?
Read full article: What happens to plastic bottles when you recycle them?Every day, you likely use all kinds of plastic - everything from water bottles to containers, and you may be recycling them, but are you doing it right? Currently, in Michigan, we recycle 15% of plastic, and their goal is to raise it to 30% by 2020. "In fact, 15% is really low for the Great Lakes region," said Greenberg. Karl Hattopp also joined us from Clean Tech Recycling to show us what happens when we recycle correctly. Hattopp says that Clean Tech Recycling takes the recycled bottles such as laundry detergent bottles and water bottles and they turn them into pellets that are eventually turned back into bottles.

Did you know there’s a right way and a wrong way to recycle?
Read full article: Did you know there’s a right way and a wrong way to recycle? You know recycling has many benefits, including saving energy and conserving resources. However, Michigan ranks as one of the states with the fewest people who actually recycle, and not all who do recycle do it properly. Greenberg introduced the EGLE's new campaign effort with the "Recycling Raccoon Squad", who are encouraging people to know it before you throw it. The "squad" helps people by giving them the general rules of thumb when it comes to properly recycling so a reusable product can be made from it. For instance, many people do not know that plastic bags cannot be recycled.

The environmental disaster that inspired Earth Day’s creation
Read full article: The environmental disaster that inspired Earth Day’s creationCities around the U.S. and world have already held, or will hold, events before the end of April to commemorate the 50th Earth Day, which is officially Monday. But before celebrating environmental awareness with various festivals, people had to recall the disaster that motivated the creation of Earth Day itself. Over the next five years, multiple lawsuits were filed against Union Oil to help pay for the damages. After seeing the damage from an airplane, Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin and environmental advocate Denis Allen Hayes were inspired to create Earth Day. In 1990, Earth Day became an international event.

Tips on how to properly recycle this Earth Day and beyond
Read full article: Tips on how to properly recycle this Earth Day and beyondSunday is Earth Day, and what better way to celebrate than help keep our planet clean. A good amount of people I interact with recycle when they can, while others really don't know how to recycle, or what to do when recycling. To help people that don't know how, here are some tips on how to properly recycle (all according to recycleacrossamerica.org.) Avoid plastic bags -- When you go to the grocery store, you typically bring home a load of plastic bags, right? However, not all plastics and metals are recyclable -- It is a rule of thumb to never recycle plastic or metal utensils, plastic bags (as mentioned earlier), plastic wraps/wrappers, Styrofoam or aluminum foil.
