DETROIT โ A group of Michigan women hold powerful positions in Washington, D.C., representing all of us in the House of Representatives and Senate. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. When it comes to Michiganโs voices in the halls of power, many of those voices are women. โI believe in listening to people, hearing what they really have to say,โ Dingell said. โShe said, โMake sure you always know that youโre representing women everywhere.โโAnd women everywhere now look to Michigan for their advice.
3 historic Michigan lighthouses awarded grants to aid restoration
Three Michigan lighthouses are being awarded grants to help repair and preserve their historic structures. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced Friday that three historic lighthouses across the state have been selected to split more than $126,000 in grants from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program operated by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office. Shifting sand, water again reveal Michigan shipwreck from 1880s
WHITEHALL, Mich. โ A change in Lake Michigan water levels has revealed a shipwreck from the 1880s that is visible in western Michigan for the first time since 2018. Experts believe itโs the wooden spine of the Contest, said Craig Rich, director of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association. The wreckage is along the shore in Muskegon County, near where the White Lake channel meets Lake Michigan. In 2018, major parts were seen for the first time since 1974, a result of changes in lake current, water levels and sand. โThings get covered and uncovered all the time.โThere was speculation in 2018 that the shipwreck was another schooner, the LC Woodruff.
Militias in Michigan: A troubling presence dating back decades
The Michigan Militia was first brought to the spotlight after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. AdTimothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the men who carried out the attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, were said to have attended Michigan Militia meetings. Dr. JoEllen Vinyard, a retired EMU history professor, studied the Michigan Militia in the late 1990s and into the early 2000s. โThat was one of their major worries across all the different groups.โThe early meetings of the Michigan Militia were attended by McVeigh and Nichols. Historic Dunbar Hospital: Detroitโs first for Black residents
DETROIT โ Black doctors needed to establish their own hospitals in 20th-century Detroit due to segregation. Dunbar Hospital was the first of its kind in the city. How Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II is inspiring change
Garlin Gilchrist II said he wants to make his family and the state proud of the work he does every day. As a public servant and role model, Gilchrist said he doesnโt take any of his responsibilities lightly. His parents believed in a strong work ethic and made sure he had the same foundation growing up. โI think all of us exists to change the world for the better,โ Gilchrist said. Gilchrist now heads the stateโs Coronavirus Task Force, addressing the racial disparities and why the crisis hit people of color in Detroit the hardest.
Going retro? Michigan bill would allow classic license plates for $100 fee
A Michigan state senatorโs bill is aiming to give drivers the option of having the classic blue and black Michigan vehicle license plates for a $100 fee. Sen. Mallory McMurrowโs (D-Royal Oak) Senate Bill 1146 also would allow the Secretary of State to readminister the blue license plates Michigan used from 1983 until 2007, as well as the black plates issued between 1979 and 1983. The blue and black license plates would be available to all drivers in Michigan for an added fee of $100. Michigan License Plate -- white with blue letters, with "Pure Michigan" campaign, first issued in 2013. We are happy to support the classic license plate design knowing it will produce a positive influence on both our culture and our economy.โ
