Metro Detroit mother describes how family navigates remote learning through power outage
DETROIT โ With hundreds of thousands of power outages in southeast Michigan because of high winds, some kids got a โsnow dayโ away from classes. One family found a way to navigate through losing power in the age of COVID-19 and virtual learning. โWe kind of told the kids that it would be a snow day. Thatโs a new snow day,โ Rozyzki said. โThatโs fun to navigate from work, trying to get them logged into their classes and everything over the phone while Iโm trying to work,โ Rozyzki said.
Power outages reported in SE Michigan on first day of virtual school
There are several thousand people without power Tuesday morning in southeastern Michigan, further complicating the virtual start to the school year for families. DTE Energy is reporting about 8,500 customers without power. There is a cluster of outages in the Auburn Hills and southeast Livonia areas. Storms have been rolling through the region.
Paula Tutman recalls covering 2003 Blackout: Nobody has power, who are we talking to?'
Friday marks the 17th anniversary of the 2003 Northeast Blackout, which knocked out power to more than 50 million, including here in Metro Detroit. Local 4s Paula Tutman recalls the event:Oh my Gosh, it HAS been 17 years, hasnt it? When I stepped out of the livetruck and onto Woodward, I could see it wasn't a single street light, but the whole darned avenue. That's when we started hearing from the studio that there was a major blackout and NOBODY had power. I called the studio, and asked that question and was told that there might be people, "out there in pockets with power and we were talking to them."
Water main break leaves dozens without power in Downtown Detroit
DETROIT โ A combination of heat and old infrastructure caused a Downtown Detroit road to buckle and a water main to break Saturday night. The water flooded the basement of the David Stott Building on Griswold Street, near Campus Martius, leaving dozens without power. It happened on Independence Day at about 10:30 p.m. A water main burst along Griswold Street between Michigan Avenue and State Street, flooding the intersection. Bedrock released the following statement:The Stott building is currently experiencing a power outage resulting from a water main break late Saturday evening. We are currently evaluating the extent of the damage and have reached out to all building residents as we assess necessary repairs.
