Ann Arbor SPARK to manage statewide Michigan internship program
The internships will be funded by Ann Arbor SPARK and a grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund. ANN ARBOR โ The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) will partner with Ann Arbor SPARK to launch the Michigan STEM Forward internship program on a statewide level. SPARK has run the program on a local level through the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti SmartZone with a decade of positive results. In scaling the program up, MEDC will work in partnership with SPARK to place 425-450 STEM students currently attending Michigan colleges annually into STEM-focused internships throughout Michigan. โAnn Arbor SPARK is thrilled to leverage our decade of experience running our own Ann Arbor-based internship program and take the opportunity to administer the Michigan STEM Forward program on behalf of the state,โ said Bill Mayer, Ann Arbor SPARKโs vice president of entrepreneurial services.
โMore than cookies and craftsโ: Girl Scouts aims to grow STEM program
Girl Scout troop leaders have spent decades encouraging young girls to explore their potential. In 2017, the Girl Scouts introduced 70 new STEM badges and over the past year, 127 girls across all age levels earned some of those badges. โI think Girl Scouts are so much more than cookies and crafts,โ troop leader Jeni Prahler said. Prahler said that Girl Scouts has evolved immensely since she was a kid. I know when I was a Girl Scout my mom was a leader and she didnโt camp,โ Prahler said.

Chandler Park Academy students take home national prize for science experiment
AdChandler Park Academy in Harper Woods is getting national recognition for their part in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. โThey had to compare, analyze the ground experiment with the space experiment, and they had to complete a two-page report and send it back to the National Center of Earth and Space Science Education program,โ Richardson said. The science experiment is tomato seed germination. Detroit charter school selected as semi-finalist in $2M STEM competition
DETROIT โ A charter school in southwest Detroit is getting some national attention after being named a semi-finalist in the $2 million Samsung Solve For Tomorrow STEM competition. The Hope of Detroit Academy is the only school in Michigan to make it to the semi-finals and will receive $15,000. Seven of the schools will receive $65,000, and the final three schools will receive the grand prize of $130,000.
Detroit nonprofit introduces underrepresented children to STEM careers
DETROIT โ The Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) has spent more that 40 years introducing children to STEM careers. While the fall session just wrapped up, itโs not too late to enroll you child in the virtual spring program. Nonprofit DAPCEP helps about 11,000 underrepresented students across southeast Michigan each year discover careers in STEM. DAPCEP Executive Director Michelle Reaves said scholarships are available to help open doors and break down barriers for people of color in STEM.
