According to Destination Ann Arbor, football weekends back in 2013 brought in more than $80 million from visitors alone for local hotels, restaurants and retail. As COVID-19 numbers increase, will Michiganders stockpile goods again?
DETROIT – Officials are concerned about the trend of rising COVID-19 cases in Michigan. Due to the high numbers, some people have already started stocking up on household items the way they did when the pandemic first started. From cleaning products to food items, stores are seeing another increase in customers buying what they can. Online sales continue to boom, but you may notice some cleaning supplies -- specially many Lysol products -- are in limited supply. They can still be ordered but it may take longer to be delivered to your home.

Lord & Taylor, Mens Wearhouse owner file for bankruptcy
NEW YORK Lord & Taylor, America's oldest retailer, is seeking bankruptcy protection, as is the owner of Mens Wearhouse and Jos. Both filed for bankruptcy protection, separately, in the Eastern Court of Virginia on Sunday. Bank stores, was struggling even before shelter-in-place orders smothered any demand for suits or ties. Bank stores, along with K&G Fashion Superstore and Moores Clothing for Men, all owned by Tailored, with continue to operate during restructuring. About two dozen stores have sought bankruptcy protection since the pandemic started.

Walmart latest retailer to require customers to wear masks
Last week, Starbucks announced that customers who visit its company-owned café locations in the U.S. will be required to wear face coverings. Costco Wholesale Club was one of the first major retailers to require face coverings for customers at all of its stores. “I think Walmart's decision will give cover to other retailers to require masks," said Michael J. Hicks, an economist at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Social media is full of videos capturing clashes between those who are asked to wear masks, and employees who are under orders to make sure people wear them. About half of U.S. states require masks in public places, according to the RILA.

Brooks Brothers, worn by Lincoln and Kennedy, goes bankrupt
Brooks Brothers will permanently close more than a quarter of its 200 stores. Brooks Brothers said Wednesday that it will continue operations as it restructures and is looking to reopen shops that are not being closed permanently. “The good thing about Brooks Brothers: It’s a very strong brand," he said. Brooks Brothers' two-button suits were a favorite of President John F. Kennedy. Clark Gable wore Brooks Brothers and Jennifer Aniston appeared on the cover of GQ magazine wearing nothing but a red, white and blue Brooks Brothers tie.

DETROIT – About two months after Art Van Furniture filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of its store, 17 of the locations in Michigan will reopen as Loves Furniture branches. Officials from Loves Furniture made the announcement Tuesday, saying the company had acquired 27 total Art Van Furniture, Levin Furniture and Wolf Furniture locations across six states. “Today’s acquisition of these locations across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions represents a tremendous milestone for our company, our associates and for the communities that we serve,” Loves Furniture CEO Matthew Damiani said. Art Van Furniture to close all stores: How did we get here?
WARREN, Mich. – Warren-based furniture chain Art Van Furniture is planning to close all stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio. Art Van has been everywhere in Metro Detroit -- on television with advertisements day and night, at 200 store locations and through 5,000 employees. In 2017, Art Van Elslander sold his prized company to a Boston hedge fund -- Thomas H. Lee Partners of Boston. Express is closing 31 stores this month, including 2 in Michigan
DETROIT – Clothing retailer Express is planning to close 31 stores by the end of this month -- including two stores in Michigan. In addition to the 31 stores that will close this month, Express plans to close 100 locations in malls around the United States by 2022. The stores closing this month are in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. In Michigan, the stores closing are:Midland: Midland Mall, 6800 Eastman Ave.Okemos: Meridian Mall, 1982 W Grand River Ave. Dozens of large retailers have filed for bankruptcy protection in the last three years, including Sears, Gymboree, Claire’s, Nine West and Payless Shoe Source.
