Michigan State Police said the crash happened at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, in the eastbound lanes of I-696 near 11 Mile Road in Warren.
Investigators said the driver of the semi truck was speeding and lost control, causing it to jackknife and block the left three lanes.
The truck began leaking fuel, which required a significant clean-up, according to authorities.
While the freeway was being cleaned, there were additional crashes that caused the rest of the lanes to be shut down.
“Drivers need to slow down in rain and soon in snow,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “It is important for drivers to also really pay attention as they pass crash scenes. We continue to see these secondary crashes due to ‘gawking’ by other drivers.”
Officials expect the right lane of eastbound I-696 to reopen soon. The left three lanes will be shut down until at least 6:30 p.m., officials believe.
