Dramatic cooldown across Metro Detroit with a warmer holiday weekend ahead

Warmth and rain chances return for the long holiday weekend

A sharp cooldown has arrived across Metro Detroit, with temperatures taking a dramatic turn after recent warmth. Afternoon highs today will struggle to climb out of the upper 60s — more than 20 degrees cooler than earlier this week — as mostly cloudy skies and a steady northerly breeze settle into southeast Michigan. The cooler air mass will keep conditions feeling noticeably different heading into the end of the workweek.

Dry weather remains in place through Friday morning, with daytime highs staying in the 60s under a mix of clouds and limited sunshine. While the cooler pattern may feel more like early spring than late May, it will provide a break from the recent heat and humidity across the region.

That quiet stretch will not last long. Rain chances return Friday evening as the next weather system moves into the Great Lakes. Showers are expected to continue through much of Saturday, making it the wettest day of the upcoming holiday weekend across Lower Michigan. Travelers and anyone with outdoor plans should prepare for periods of rain and damp conditions, especially during the first half of the weekend.

Temperatures will rebound slightly into the 70s for the Memorial Day weekend, although unsettled weather will linger. Forecast trends point toward rain continuing Saturday, followed by more scattered afternoon showers and storms on Sunday across Metro Detroit. By Monday, only a slight chance of rain remains as conditions gradually improve.

Farther north, cooler air will dominate through the weekend, with temperatures trending lower compared to southern parts of the state. Northern Michigan is expected to see the steadiest rain on Saturday before drier weather begins developing by Memorial Day.

While the holiday weekend will not be a complete washout, residents across southeast Michigan should expect changing conditions and keep umbrellas nearby, particularly from Friday night through Sunday afternoon.
