Detroit nonprofit offers community support, holistic services for new moms

The Hitha Healing House is nurturing mothers the same way they care for their little ones, offering a community of support and holistic services for expectant and new moms.

Kenzo and Chloe White have been part of this community since before Kenzo was born. White said she was looking for a support system during a difficult time in her life.

“I was in a relationship with my son’s father, but it didn’t really go the way I planned,” White said. “I was definitely looking for a support system.”

Support was exactly what Kayana Sessoms had in mind when she created the Hitha Healing House, which she describes as “a space that’s been curated for those facing a time of birth or rebirth.”

At the Healing House, expectant mothers and new moms have access to a variety of holistic care services, including therapeutic massage, spine alignment, therapy, and lactation support.

These services made a big difference for White, who worked on her feet up to her due date.

“Getting a massage, seeing a chiropractor, reset — those are money things I didn’t have to pay for. Having it free of charge here was amazing,” White said.

The community of moms has grown to 30 members. Soon, a new house that Sessoms is renovating will provide temporary housing for unhoused mothers.

All of this work is deeply personal for Sessoms, who channels her grief into her mission.

“He was my inspiration, a huge champion of my ideas, big and small in life,” Sessoms said, referring to her late father.

Sessoms originally purchased the Healing House for her father, who passed away in 2020. That same year, she gave birth to a daughter who lived only 10 days. It’s why she focuses so heavily on maternal support, grief and loss.

In the new year, Sessoms plans to do even more. In 2026, she’s starting a postpartum soup line for new mothers during the first 40 days. She’s currently accepting donations for the initiative, and all donations made by Dec. 31 will be matched.

If you’d like to know more about Hitha Healing House, they’re hosting an open house on Tuesday, December 2, from 12 to 8 p.m. There, you can learn more about the services offered and how you can help.
