1 suspect in custody after shots fired at law enforcement in Harper Woods

Police asked residents to stay in their homes for hours while a search was underway

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – One suspect has been detained in relation to a shooting incident that prompted a multi-jurisdictional police response in Harper Woods Tuesday morning.

Harper Woods police posted to social media just after 10:30 a.m. telling residents to avoid the area of Peerless and Damman streets near I-94 due to a “developing law enforcement situation.”

Police say the investigation stemmed from an earlier incident where a law enforcement task force comprised of several agencies was fired upon in the area of eastbound I-94 between Moross and Vernier.

Officers from the Detroit Police Department, Michigan State Police and Harper Woods responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle abandoned in a residential area in Harper Woods.

Police searched the area for at least two hours, scanning the roadway for evidence on foot with K-9 officers. At least one evidence marker could be seen on the road next to what appeared to be a shell casing.

Police say no officers were injured in the shooting and Michigan State Police is leading the investigation with assistance from local agencies.

All lanes of eastbound I-94 remain closed at Moross Road while the investigation continues.
