Wintry mix could slow Metro Detroit’s Tuesday morning commute: What to know

Rain–snow mix Tuesday may slow morning drive before a warmer weekend in Metro Detroit.

Metro Detroit will go from quiet skies Monday night to a slick and slower start Tuesday morning as a quick-moving system brings a mix of rain and snow. Temperatures will fall into the mid- to upper-20s overnight, allowing early precipitation to stick to cold surfaces and potentially create slippery stretches for the morning commute.

Tuesday

Light snow is possible before 11 a.m. Tuesday, mixing with or changing to light rain heading into midday. High temperatures will reach the upper-30s to near 40 degrees across Detroit, Dearborn, Warren, Livonia, Troy and other metro communities. While snowfall totals should stay under a half-inch, even a thin coating can lead to slippery conditions and patchy icing on bridges, ramps and untreated surfaces. Drivers should plan on extra time and cautious travel through the late morning.

Areas north of Detroit, including Lapeer, Sandusky and Port Huron, will run a few degrees colder, but the chance of seeing rain and snow showers is lower. The chance of precipitation will increase south of I-69.

Conditions improve Tuesday night as skies gradually clear and temperatures drop into the upper 20s.

Wednesday

Wednesday brings a brighter, calmer day with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower- to mid-40s.

Thursday

A warming trend continues into Thursday, when highs climb to near 50 degrees, although clouds and the chance of rain will increase later in the day.

Friday

Friday remains mild with highs around 50 degrees, but a chance of rain returns — timing that could have an influence on downtown Detroit’s holiday kickoff. The 22nd Annual Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place Friday night at Campus Martius Park. The free event begins at 7 p.m. and features live music, figure skating shows, food trucks, holiday attractions and a visit from Santa. With the possibility of a few showers, you will want to wear layers, a waterproof jacket and good footwear for the festivities.

This Weekend

The weekend looks better for outdoor plans. Saturday turns partly cloudy to mostly sunny, with highs in the upper-40s, followed by a similar finish on Sunday as temperatures once again approach 50 degrees.

Winter may be knocking, but the overall pattern remains manageable heading into the weekend. The biggest weather impact arrives Tuesday morning, when the rain-snow mix could briefly complicate travel before a stretch of milder and more comfortable November days settles in.
