Winter storm forecast

After plenty of cloud covering a few snowflakes to end the week on Friday, we’ve got our first significant snowfall of the season on the way, looking ahead into the weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

The cloud cover has stuck around the region overnight Friday night into early Saturday morning, and while we start the day dry, expect the snow to overspread the region as we go throughout the day on Saturday. Here’s the latest information on what you can expect in our winter weather timeline:

SATURDAY MORNING: Cloudy skies, cold temperatures. A dry start to the day before the snow moves into the region.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Snow overspreads the region from west to east; everyone should see snow by 3:00-4:00 PM.

SATURDAY EVENING/SATURDAY NIGHT: Snow likely for everyone. Potential for heavy snow does exist. Where heavy snow does fall, snowfall rates could be as high as 1″ per hour.

SUNDAY MORNING: Snow likely. Parts of Eastern Wayne, Eastern Monroe, and Eastern Macomb Counties could see a brief transition over to a rain/snow wintry mix before changing back over to snow, before winding down and ending.

Most of the area should see 4-6 inches of snow by the end.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON: A few flakes/isolated snow shower possible thanks to Northwesterly flow kicking in, blowing and drifting of snow possible with winds gusting to 25-30 MPH by Sunday as well

Once the snow starts to fall, road conditions will deteriorate quickly on Saturday afternoon and into Saturday evening. If you do have to travel out overnight Saturday night into early on Sunday morning, you will want to give yourself plenty of extra time as road crews will be hard at work, trying to keep the main arteries clear, but expect plenty of secondary and side streets to be snow-covered for a good chunk of the day heading into the end of the weekend on Sunday.

We will break up the cloud cover overnight Sunday night into early Monday morning, but the damage will be done. Thanks to the snowfall over the weekend. And with temperatures falling well into the teens early on Monday morning, we could see slick road conditions heading out the door back to work in school on Monday morning.

We will keep cloud cover in the forecast, looking ahead into early next week on Monday, but we have another system that will move into the region Monday night, early on Tuesday morning, and this will also bring another chance of snow that could potentially leave an additional accumulation before it’s all said and done. High temperature is heading into the upper 20s on Monday afternoon, then falling back into the teens overnight Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

Dry weather moves back into the forecast by the time we get to the middle of the week, for Wednesday and Thursday. But we are not looking at a substantial warm-up, heading into the middle and end of the week as well. High temperatures heading into the low end of the 30s on Wednesday, then getting colder once again. Expect daytime highs to drop into the upper 20s for Thursday and into next Friday.

While we keep the cloud cover around it for Thursday, it does look like we have another chance for some snow showers, moving into the region by the end of next week on Friday. Will continue to fine-tune that forecast as we head into the start of next week.
