DETROIT – WDIV is on the lookout for a hard-charging, dynamic, and enthusiastic Investigative Producer to join our Investigates team. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Investigative Producer will play a crucial role in raising the bar for investigative journalism within our coverage area. This individual will lead the charge in discovering, analyzing, and presenting high-impact stories that resonate with our diverse audience. By leveraging advanced data journalism and computer-assisted reporting (CAR) techniques, the Investigative Producer will produce compelling stories that not only inform but also drive change within the community. You’ll be expected to dig deeper, providing context and perspective to uncover the truth and make a meaningful impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify and develop investigative and consumer stories, from initial idea generation to production.
- Utilize strong visual and creative storytelling skills, enhancing stories with graphics, animations, and data visualization.
- Deliver comprehensive digital content across all platforms, including our website, social media, podcasting, and livestreaming channels.
- Collaborate closely on editorial, legal, and ethical discussions to refine and enhance story quality.
- Contribute actively to daily editorial meetings, infusing regular coverage with investigative depth and context.
- Train and mentor other team members and newsroom staff in CAR techniques.
- Ensure all relevant stakeholders are kept informed about story developments and progress.
- Maintain high journalistic standards, adhering to legal and FCC regulations.
- Other related duties as assigned.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior years of experience in newscast producing, with prior investigative producing.
- Innately curious.
- Strong news judgment.
- Proven mastery of computer-assisted reporting (CAR) techniques and multimedia storytelling tools.
- Proficient in legal research methods, including familiarity with public databases, TPIA, and FOIA procedures.
- A track record of producing high-impact, visual stories for multiple platforms.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work varying hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and ability to travel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, or a related field.
- Bilingual abilities.
- Experience with Adobe Premier for shooting and editing content.
- Knowledge of electronic gear for surveillance and undercover work.
