Go 4 It: Community generosity brings warmth to those in need

DETROIT – What started as a collection day ended with everyone walking away with some incredible memories.

It was our mid-October Go 4 It event Wrapped in Warmth. We asked our viewers to donate new towels, blankets, and socks for Capuchin Services in Detroit -- and you over-delivered.

“So grateful to everyone, all the viewers at WDIV, local four, who were just so generous and really came through in such a big way,” Tim Hinkle said. “It really shattered our expectations. We were not expecting this.”

The event raised more than $15,000 and brought in thousands of socks and towels and hundreds of blankets.

Kay Lawrence was one of the people you helped. She got one of the donated towels. She showed up on a cold Tuesday morning to take advantage of Capuchin’s free showers and the free towels.

“It’s important because I’m homeless, so living house to house, and not really being able to shower, or being afraid to ask people because it’s like you’re walking on eggshells,” Lawrence said. “It’s hard to go up to someone and say, ‘Can I use your shower?’”

The mother of three also got some new warm clothes.

“It feels good. Feel like a newborn baby when I know how they feeling, and get their diaper changed and get some fresh warm clothes and a warm bottle, and then I’m about to go eat,” Lawrence said. “I appreciate y’all a whole lot. Like I could cry right now, like, I really appreciate it.”

“People come out often just feeling kind of refreshed, renewed, that sense of dignity that you know comes with just being clean,” said Hinkle.

Jamal Bullock said he feels like a new man after relying on Capuchin and the Go 4 It donations. And for us here at Local 4, the experience was transformative seeing first-hand the love and donations from our viewers.
