Go 4 It: Detroit woman on a mission to help neighbors in need this winter

DETROIT – Sharron Thompson, a longtime resident of Detroit, is on a mission to support her neighbors, especially those seeking relief from the cold.

This week, Thompson has been distributing warm coats that can double as sleeping bags. Her vehicle is packed with these essential items as she travels the city, looking for people who might need a helping hand.

On Friday, one of her stops was a motel off 8 Mile and Greenfield.

“You need some boots,” Thomspon told one woman as she tried on a new winter coat. “So, I have to get you some boots, right?”

Thompson said she plans to distribute 150 coats this week.

Residents like Iona Cobb and her neighbors are grateful, calling Thompson’s efforts a blessing.

“She helps everybody out,” Cobb explained. “Brings food, and everything. She’s been doing it for a very, very, long time.”

Thompson said she’s been dedicated to supporting Detroit’s most vulnerable residents for several years. She is out in the community at least twice a week, giving back and making a difference.

When asked why she does this, Thompson said, “Because I love people. And let me tell you something, I’m one step away from being homeless. One step away from being needy. But God blessed.”

Despite facing her own health challenges, including a recent stroke that has affected her speech, Thompson remains committed to her mission.

Her faith and passion for singing gospel music keep her motivated, ensuring that her dedication to helping others never wavers.

Thompson said financial support from friends, family, members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and others helps in her mission to provide service and resources to the community. She has recorded a gospel music CD. That music is shared with those who make donations to help in her service projects.
