LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – A grieving Lincoln Park family is caught up in a cremation nightmare that’s now costing them big money they simply don’t have.
Donna Mahon’s planned cremation was paid in full more than 25 years ago, but when the time came to lay her to rest, the family was hit with a nearly $1,000 bill all because of a paperwork mix-up.
Donna Mahon passed away on Dec. 28, 2024, while in hospice at Corewell Dearborn.
Her husband of 28 years is grieving her loss.
Their home in Lincoln Park was filled with the medical equipment, hospital beds, and medication she relied on during her final days.
She had prepaid for cremation years ago, hoping one day, when the time came, she would remove some of the stress for those left behind. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.
The funeral home told Local 4 that everything was done on their end. The delay was caused by the necessary medical signatures, which, considering the circumstances, reduced the amount the family had to pay for the embalming process.
The cost of emballing is normally around $900. Now, the family is only paying half, but they say the amount will be difficult.
