Who doesn’t love “Mean Girls,” right?
The 2004 comedy became an instant classic when it was released 20 years ago (feel old yet?), and I’ve probably watched it more times than I’d like to admit. Just by the headline of this article, you already know that I can drop a quote from the movie at a moment’s notice. Danny DeVito, I love your work!

That’s why I was so excited to see that the Broadway production of “Mean Girls” would be making its way to the Fisher Theatre.
Funny enough, this was my second time seeing the musical version at the Fisher. It was here a few summers ago, and just like the movie, I guess I can watch the musical multiple times and never get sick of it either!
The show is always great, but what really blew me away this time seeing it was the cast. Especially the actresses who played Regina George and Janice. Maya Petropoulos (a native Metro Detroiter) embodies the iconic Regina George. You could just tell that she studied the way Rachel McAdams brought that character to life. And don’t even get me started on the vocals. There were multiple times throughout the show where I just said “wow” to myself over the notes these ladies were hitting.
Another highlight was the actress who played Karen Smith. Karen is obviously a minor character, and third wheel in The Plastics, but actress Maryrose Brendel stole every scene she was in. They somehow made Karen in the musical funnier that she was in the movie, which is a pretty big deal since Amanda Seyfried was iconic in the original movie as Karen.

The show is written by Tina Fey, so you can expect that all of your favorite “Mean Girls” quotes will show up the musical, as well as some new jokes for a more modern audience. One of my favorite new jokes was about seeing a meaningful quote that was printed on a tote bag, I don’t know why it made me laugh so much, but it did!
If you love “Mean Girls” and want a fun night out at the theatre, you have to make it a priority to go and see this show. It’s fun, light, exciting and the perfect distraction to all the craziness in the world today. Gretchen tries desperately to make “fetch” happen during the show, but I’m here to say that “Mean Girls” at the Fisher Theatre is fetch!
“Mean Girls” is here in Detroit from Nov. 19-24. It’s a short run, so get those tickets while you can! You go, Glen Coco! Click here for tickets.
