Imagine a place where an airport, beauty salon, police station, and jail cell are all under one roof. Yes such a place does exists, and it’s right in metro Detroit. It’s called Collective Studios, a place where filmmakers can create movies and the public can get a glimpse of how they’re made.
The whole idea behind this came from filmmakers who felt there were not enough location options that were easily accessible to shoot films. “As independent filmmakers, it’s hard to get access to certain places, like airports and hospitals,” said Timashion Jones, a Michigan filmmaker.
He is one of 13 Filmmakers who came together to open the studios and the 12,000 sq. ft. space is quite impressive.
“We have, interchangeably, about 44 different sets, from a beauty salon, airport, airplane, jail cell, courtroom, restaurant/bar, and a church to name a few,” said Marshalle Favors, who’s also a filmmaker and partner at Collective Studios.
She said, in addition to providing a space for filmmakers and creatives, they also offer interactive tours that are open to the public.
Collective Studios is located at 18000 West 9 Mile Road, Southfield, Michigan.
