Dashcam video: Stolen Jeep leads to wrong-way chase on I-94

Deputies recover 3-year-old and infant from vehicle following pursuit

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 29-year-old man from Chesterfield has been arrested Thursday, April 11 after a dramatic pursuit on I-94.

It started in Clinton Township at about 9 a.m. when the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a stolen Jeep in the area. According to authorities, deputies attempted to stop the silver Jeep Grand Cherokee on Price Drive, near Metropolitan Parkway, but the driver refused to stop and drove off.

The sheriff’s office said the driver went from Price Drive to King Drive, where they blew a red light and turned onto Harper Avenue. The driver was said to be speeding, driving recklessly and -- at times -- driving on the wrong side of the roads. He entered westbound I-94 near 15 Mile Road, where deputies attempted to box the vehicle in.

The driver reportedly performed a U-turn on the westbound lanes and drove eastbound, crossing multiple lanes of traffic and nearly hitting westbound vehicles. The vehicle was eventually stopped by a patrol vehicle near Shook Road in Harrison Township.

Dashboard camera of the pursuit can be watched in the video player above.

One deputy sustained a minor injury and three Macomb County vehicles were damaged during the chase.

The sheriff’s office said once the vehicle was stopped, deputies found a 3-year-old and an infant in the backseat. They were taken to a hospital, medically cleared and released to a family member.

The driver, later identified as Devante Everette, was taken into custody and was charged Friday, April 12, with fourth-degree fleeing and eluding, receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle and two counts of second-degree child abuse. All charges are felonies.

His bond was set at $10,000 cash/surety. He is expected to return to court for a probable cause hearing on April 23.
