Pontiac volunteers join forces for city-wide clean-up on Earth Day

It was all in celebration of Earth Day

PONTIAC, Mich. – Volunteers in Pontiac picked up litter throughout the city, pulled weeds, and spread mulch in flower beds.

It was all in celebration of Earth Day.

“I like cleaning up, that’s for sure, and this is my city,” volunteer Felicia Wilson said.

The city-wide community clean-up on Earth Day started in 2022.

“The best thing about this event is that it is not just about beautifying and cleaning up the city, but it is also about bringing people together, making sure we are standing shoulder to shoulder, elbow to elbow, rolling up our sleeves, and putting some sweat equity into improving our community,” said Pontiac Mayor Tim Greimel.

For people who call Pontiac home, ensuring it looks nice is essential.

“I am a resident of Pontiac, and I wanted to make our city a little bit better, cleaner, and safer for the children and for everybody else,” volunteer Alicia Wiggins said.

Volunteer Denise Hatter encouraged her neighbors to get involved.

“We want to live in a clean city,” Hatter said. “I think the majority of people do. I think you can’t keep saying what needs to be done; you have to get out and do it.”

A group of volunteers from Oakland County Workforce Development came to help with the clean-up effort.

“It’s gorgeous today,” said volunteer Jennifer Llewellyn. “It’s absolutely gorgeous. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day.”

This year, Pontiac expanded its spring clean-up beyond Earth Dah.

The dates are May 18, June 8, and July 13. The final clean-up will conclude with a celebration.

Greimel said a more attractive city can spur economic development.

“Keeping the city clean is critically important, not just everyday life, but also to attract investment, grow jobs, and to make sure we are being economically prosperous,” Greimel said.
