‘Oily substance’ causes Square Lake Road closure in Oakland County

Roads reopen, but police seek answers

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Part of Square Lake Road in Oakland County closed for a few hours Tuesday morning due to an “oily substance” that was found on the road.

West Bloomfield Township police said on Tuesday, May 7 that Square Lake Road between St. Joseph Street and Pine Ridge Road was closed until further notice. At around 1 a.m. the same day, an oily substance was reportedly “discovered” on the main road and on side streets in the area, causing slick conditions for drivers.

The road was cleaned and reopen to traffic as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, but drivers were still encouraged to take a different route and avoid the area.

Authorities said they determined the substance wasn’t harmful after doing a preliminary exam. However, police did not immediately say what the substance was.

It appears the driver of a box truck is responsible for dumping the liquid on the ground. Police say they believe the truck was driving through the area between 10:45 p.m.-11 p.m. on Monday, May 6.

Anyone who has information about the box truck is asked to call Detective Foster with the West Bloomfield Township police at 248-975-8926.
