FLINT, Mich. – A Michigan man has been found guilty after he killed his girlfriend because she found out about his secret relationship, and then he left her body in the home with her 5-year-old son, officials said.

29-year-old woman killed

Police said Kevin Stubbs Jr., 40, of Flint, got into a dispute with his girlfriend, Treasury Causey-Box, 29, the day before Halloween in 2022.

The dispute arose when Causey-Box found out that Stubbs was having a secret relationship, officials said.

Prosecutors said Stubbs shot Causey-Box at her townhome as retaliation for certain text messages.

Causey-Box’s 5-year-old son heard gunshots and went downstairs, where he found his mother dead on the floor, officials said. Stubbs had already left.

Stubbs found guilty

Detectives from Michigan State Police and the Flint Police Department investigated the case and ultimately arrested Stubbs a few days later.

Prosecutors announced Thursday, June 13, 2024, that a jury found Stubbs guilty of second-degree murder and seven other felony charges.

Stubbs faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 22.
