Pilot, passenger emerge unscathed in Monroe County helicopter crash

Engine problems led to crash

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – A pilot and his passenger emerged unscathed during a helicopter crash in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred on a farmer’s field in London Township on Thursday (July 4) at 10:43 a.m., between Oelke Road and Yensch Road.

The Monroe County Central Dispatch received a call from a citizen advising that the helicopter had crashed near their home.

The swift response of the first responders from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, London/Maybee/Raisinville Fire Department, and Monroe County Ambulance to the crash scene ensured the safety of the pilot and passenger.

The pilot, a 51-year-old Newport man, stated that he began experiencing engine trouble on his way back to Willow Run Airport.

After locating a suitable location, the pilot used autorotation to control his descent, ultimately crashing into the field.

The Uniform Services Division and the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact 734-240-7700.
