DETROIT – The people behind Eastern Market Brewing Company are opening a new pizza and beer joint this week in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood.
Opening Saturday, July 13 is the second location of Elephant & Co.: a Detroit-style pizza restaurant that will feature beer from Eastern Market Brewing. The new location, which is dubbed the “flagship” location, is opening in the former Founders space on Charlotte Street in Midtown.
The restaurant can accommodate 200 people inside, plus another 100 people on their heated patio -- which is expected to be open “much of the year,” officials said. Inside the space is an artistic wall of 50 self-serve beer taps that offer Eastern Market Brewing beers, cider, and wine.
The space will also include a Dooped Donuts cafe with a “robotic barista,” and a small market with locally-sourced items. It’s the Detroit-style pizza, however, that the company says will set them apart, particularly when it comes to the dough.
The people working at Eastern Market Brewing reportedly experimented with pizza dough recipes during the pandemic. With their “knowledge of fermentation and yeast,” the team came up with complex doughs that they’d sell out of while working with the Ferndale Project.
“We’re a brewery turned pizza company, and truly understand the importance of fermentation,” Said Pauline Knighton-Prueter, president of Elephant & Co. “It’s what’s made us one of Michigan’s fastest-growing breweries and now, Detroit’s best pizza.”
Their unique recipes will be on display this weekend in Detroit. The opening menu for Elephant & Co. will include pizzas inspired by coney dogs, crab rangoons, pickles, and more, in addition to more traditional options, officials said.
Elephant & Co. will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at its new Detroit location at 456 Charlotte Street. Guests will be able to purchase pizza, beer, donuts and coffee.
Elephant & Co. opened their first location earlier this year in Downtown Royal Oak.
