Health fair offers Metro Detroit men free health screenings

DETROIT – What could bring hundreds of men to Ford Field besides a Lions game?

“I came down here to get my health checked,” Hassan Gibson said.

Dr. Michael Lutz’s reports about a third of the men in line are uninsured or underinsured.

The retired urologist is also founder and president of the Men’s Health Foundation. His advocacy for promoting men’s health recently earned him a Go 4 It award.

The Men’s Health Event is structured like a doctor’s visit under one roof where attendees start their health journey by getting their vitals checked and discussing their medical history before heading over for the health screenings.

“We will probably see over 1,000 men today,” Dr. Lutz said. “Over 10 percent of our attendees use it as their annual physical exam.”

Year after year, people take advantage of the complimentary services for bloodwork, vaccinations, dental and vision screenings. This is Ray Smigelski’s fourth year coming to the men’s health event.

“This is awesome. I think us guys in general – we just need to do – stop worrying about being so macho about things and just be honest about your health with people,” Smigelski said. “It’s not really a big deal. It shouldn’t be such a stigma.”

The screenings not only look at one’s physical health, but mental health. In a snapshot, men can walk away knowing the status of their health. However, it only tells one side of this story.

“What happens to the thousands of men in our greater Detroit community who chose to stay home and stay on the sidelines,” Dr. Lutz said. “So, we would like for them to get in the game come here, come to Ford Field, come join us and maybe we could save their lives.”
