Family car becomes home after eviction for mother of 4 in Metro Detroit

Family was evicted in August

DETROIT – Homeless shelters across Metro Detroit are already full headed into the winter months.

“I’ve reached out to 211, Wayne Metro, Starfish Family Services, The Salvation Army,” Tanyaill McCurry said.

McCurry and her four kids were evicted in August.

Since then, her family has been living out of their car, searching for a shelter.

To get into a shelter, a person must get a referral from CAM Detroit. However, there’s a waitlist for referrals because shelters are full.

“They’re still saying because I have four children that it is hard for them to place us,” McCurry said.

Local 4 contacted Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to help McCurry.

“We don’t turn people away at situations such as this…even though we are currently at capacity for families that are staying with us,” Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries Director of Communications Chiara Clayton said.

Clayton offered McCurry and her family shelter for one night and said a case manager would work with them to find a more permanent shelter placement.

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is working to fund a program that allows them to provide shelter directly to people without a referral.

“We’re actually putting a practice in place to put additional funds so that we can fund additional beds directly so that they don’t have to go through the referral system so that we can be able to help people directly through us,” Clayton said.
