What is the I-75 highway cap?

The I-75 cap is a local project that is supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Highway caps is a type of bridge built on top of a highway. Its commonly used to create new park areas and as a way to connect the community.

What is the goal of this project?

The goal of the project is to reconnect communities that are cut off from economic and social opportunities due to the location of the highway. According to the downtown Detroit partnership website, highway caps can help enhance connectivity and quality of life. Other potential benefits include enhanced mobility and environmental benefits.

What area is under study?

Currently, the team is studying cap options extending from 3rd avenue on the west to Brush Street on the east. They are also looking at the surrounding areas to see how a highway cap would impact their community.

What is the timeline of this project?

The current plan has three phases:

Phase #1: May-June assessing community goal and needs

Phase #2: July-August exploring cap options

Phase #3: September-October preferred alternative

2025- Secure funding, design and environmental studies

2025/2026- Complete design and beginning construction

2027/2028- Complete construction and add amenities
