Sheetz expansion sparks concerns among Metro Detroit businesses

ROMULUS, Mich. – A popular gas station is breaking out in Metro Detroit, but not everyone is happy about it. Sheetz plans to open dozens of locations in the next five years. However, one group wants to stop this expansion from happening.

Sheetz recently opened its only Metro Detroit gas station so far in Romulus in August 2024. It plans to open about 50 to 60 gas stations throughout the Great Lakes state within the next five years.

The Middle East and North African (MENA) American Chamber of Commerce, which represents hundreds of local business owners, said Sheetz’s expansion has anti-competitive practices, environmental risks and impacts on local supply chains.

“Our communities rely on Michigan-owned stations, which are not only economic hubs but also community cornerstones,” said Faye Nemer, CEO of the MENA American Chamber of Commerce. “Allowing Sheetz’s disruptive entry would threaten local businesses that have long invested in our communities and continue to support our local economy.”

Sheetz responded to the growing concern and released the following statement Tuesday morning:

“Sheetz is dedicated to making a positive impact in Southeast Michigan. Each new store will create 30-35 local jobs, offering not just competitive wages but also exceptional benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, tuition reimbursement, and more. As we expand in the Detroit area, Sheetz remains steadfast in our mission to drive economic growth, uplift local communities, and make a meaningful difference every step of the way.”

Nick Ruffner, Public Affairs Manager for Sheetz.

MENA has some other concerns, and they are holding a press conference form 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 19, 2024, in Dearborn to address those concerns.
