HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – Highland Park resident Isabelle Gaddie has been battling a years-long plight regarding drivers crashing into her fence as the number of crashes has reached 27.
Her fence is at the corner of John R Road and Davison Service Drive, a corner that’s become very familiar to Local 4 as drivers continue not following the rules of the road.
Gaddie said she didn’t know what to do about it.
People have stepped in to help in the past by donating their time and work to fix the fence, but it just keeps getting hit by vehicles.
However, on Wednesday (Nov. 27), H&H Home Improvement put in place new efforts to keep Gaddie and her home safe.
“I just hate that people lose control of the automobile and come up in here, but I hate it more that they come into my yard,” said Gaddie.
A flurry of work took place at the 81-year-old’s home, but the surprising work came just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday as a fence made of iron was installed.
Xavier Hernandez owns H&H Home Improvement.
He said that after seeing Local 4’s story on Tuesday, Nov. 26, officer Hall with the Highland Park Police Department called him, and he and his crew did not hesitate to come out to put up the iron fence at no cost.
“You know what, I just feel like I have to give back to her because she’s been having too many incidents here,” said Hernandez.
Gaddie told us she wanted someone in Highland Park, Wayne County, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), to find a simple solution to slow drivers down in the dangerous intersection.
She got hit with every repair bill, and one time, she was hit by a car while standing in her own yard.
That’s where we came in to listen and hopefully help her.
“I appreciate you,” Gaddie said. “Thank you officer Hall for recommending H&H. I don’t know what I can do for them, but I hope it’s something that I can do, even if it’s something as just letting public know who they are and when I asked them what’s the charge, they said ‘No charge.’ Besides that, I want to thank Channel 4. I thank God for all of you guys for coming out and giving me support and helping me get this problem resolved. I’m thinking about having some signs put up saying ‘Deadman corner, slow down.’”
