MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Nearly two weeks ago, a Warren officer was left lying paralyzed for hours after a fall during a hunting trip. Now, as he fights to recover, his colleagues at the police department are showing up for his 7-year-old son.
Nick Kott, who has been with the department for 13 years, remains in critical condition at the University of Michigan Hospital following his injury, according to a release from the Warren Police Department.
He and his wife, Holli, and son Jack, 7, are all passionate about hockey.
Nick has played, coached and refereed hockey throughout his entire life, and his son plays hockey on the Lakeland Hawks Hockey Team.
To honor Nick, and support Jack, more than 40 officers and dispatchers went to the Mt. Clemens Ice Arena to cheer on the 7-year-old during his game against the Trenton Trojans.
"Together, we cheered on Jack and the Hawks to an amazing victory! Celebrating this victory with Jack was a truly amazing experience for everybody involved," said the Warren Police Department in the release. “It is often said that law enforcement is a family. Last night, the men and women of the Warren Police Department showed what family means to us. This is what we do, this is who we are, and this is what we stand for. We come together to support each other when one of us is down and hurting.”
