PLYMOUTH-CANTON, Mich. – The show must go on as the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company prepares for opening night a few weeks after its prop trailer was stolen.
The theft on Nov. 17 left them without a set, but since then, they’ve been rebuilding with the community’s help.
This weekend will mark the 40th anniversary of the Plymouth Canton Ballet Company’s production of The Nutcracker.
This year’s production will feature many newly built set pieces after most of them were stolen with their prop trailer.
“I do feel like it’s going to be one of the best yet,” June Smith with the ballet company said. “I don’t know if it’s because of the 40 years or if it’s because of the community and the support and the love that we feel.”
A GoFundMe launched after the left has raised close to $18,000.
“Will we miss some of the old things? Yes. But it has brought the community together,” Smith said.
The money raised has helped purchase a new prop trailer along with other materials to rebuild the props stolen.
Eric Banners is one of the volunteers who helped rebuild the set.
“To be able to see all these new props come together and we made some improvements because we had the opportunity,” Banners said.
The show at Salen High School will run on Saturday and Sunday nights.
