Why salt won’t be as effective on ice in Metro Detroit Thursday

Arctic air reinforced by blustery winds will lead to wind chills below zero around sunrise Thursday morning. Light snow showers or flurries continue through the day.

Thursday afternoon will have highs in the 20s, but wind chills will only rise to single digits in the afternoon.

If you work outside or your kids stand at the bus stop, these are dangerously cold temperatures if you don’t take the proper precautions.

Frigid temperatures can slow the salt’s effectiveness on ice.

Salt won’t be as effective on Thursday as one pound of salt will only melt five pounds of ice as the temperatures drop.

Here’s a breakdown of how many pounds of ice one pound of salt can melt depending on the temperature:

  • 30 degrees - 46 pounds
  • 25 degrees - 14 pounds
  • 20 degrees - 9 pounds
  • 15 degrees - 6 pounds
  • 10 degrees - 5 pounds
