Local 4 is tracking wrong-way drivers causing death and destruction on the Lodge Freeway and now on I-75 at 7 Mile Road, and the driver got away.
We talked to one of the victims who survived but now is struggling. She said the incident on Detroit’s east side was terrifying.
“It was terrifying,” said Toney Burk. “It was so scary as I couldn’t do anything. I seen it and I tried to avoid it, but I couldn’t.”
To say the 26-year-old has her hands full was an understatement.
Burk is a mother of two young boys, a nursing student, and an overnight CNA with no vehicle to get around as of Monday (Dec. 6) around 7 a.m. because it was involved in the wreck.
The wrong-way driver, coming right at her, sent other cars left and right as they smashed into Burk.
Burk said the first thing that came to mind before the crash was, “What the hell!”
“What the hell is what I thought,” Burk said.
Two days prior, bus driver Robert Glenn was nearly killed on the Lodge Freeway when a wrong-way driver hit him.
The driver involved in that crash was killed.
Just after Thanksgiving, a wrong-way driver killed a man whom she collided with.
“It’s crazy because ‘How can you go the wrong way on the freeway,’” Burk said. There isn’t no turnaround on I-75. It’s impossible. I do pray that the driver is OK and whatever they’re going through, they’ll be able to get through it. I don’t have my car, and it’s hard, especially at a time right now as I am Ubering and Lyfting as I just paid $70 for a ride to school this morning because I had to take final exams."
