Focus: HOPE nonprofit distributes 1.5K meals to seniors

Volunteers make distribution possible

DETROIT – Hundreds of seniors will have something to put on the table for the holidays.

The non-profit Focus: HOPE spent Saturday morning distributing 1,500 meals for home deliveries to registered participants. No bone-chilling temps could stop more than 500 volunteers from warming the hearts of others.

“We absolutely admire what Focus: HOPE is doing and we love to just give back to the community,” said Maya Green, who volunteered alongside her firm partner of Greenlight Law Firm.

A line of cars led into Focus: HOPE on Oakman Boulevard, where drivers eagerly waited to receive meals to pass out to seniors. The goal was to make sure seniors focus on the holidays with loved ones and friends, not on their next meal, according to organizers.

“Events like this are extra, extra important, especially around the holidays just to make sure folks out there know that they weren’t forgotten -- that there are people thinking that are thinking about them out there,” said Rachel Sherman, manager of the volunteer department.

Sherman credits a lot of the work to the extra helping hands, both the volunteers on-site and those driving.

When longtime volunteers are asked why they do it, it’s no different than any other celebrated holiday tradition.

“We love seeing the seniors get the meals and the meals are fabulous what everybody does here for the seniors, and we love being a part of it,” Elke Becker said.
