GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. – An Illinois man has died following a snowmobile crash in Northern Michigan.

At 1:51 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, Grand Traverse County deputies responded to the marked snowmobile trail near the Rasho Road Trailhead in East Bay Township after receiving a report of a snowmobile crash.

A 2024 Polaris snowmobile collided with an iron powerline line structure, according to the sheriff’s office.

When deputies arrived, they found two people who were severely injured in the crash.

The snowmobile operator was a 30-year-old Illinois woman, and the passenger was a 32-year-old Illinois man.

They were both treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where the passenger died from his injuries.

Authorities believe speed and inexperience with operating a snowmobile were factors in the crash. Both riders were wearing helmets.

The investigation is ongoing.
